Eskom applies for sharp electricity price hikes

Eskom intends charging consumers an average of 97,5 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity within the next five years, an increase that Business Report says is equivalent to 400% since 2008 when tariffs were just 19,4 cents a kilowatt hour.

The target rate is almost double the current price of 50,3 cents. Eskom has applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to approve the national increases of 15% planned between now and 2017.

The increases compare with the Reserve Bank's consumer inflation target of between 3% and 6%.
