Community Chest CEO Lorenzo Davids said that the organisation will this year provide R16-million in direct financial support to non-profit organisations (NPOs) working in the education, health, community development, and income generation sectors. The balance of R14-million will be spent on capacity building programmes, disaster relief operations and community upliftment initiatives.

"We are extremely proud to have more than doubled the amount of assistance the Community Chest can offer this year," said Davids. "So far 233 NPOs have received funding and assistance to the value of R11,475,960."

The Community Chest investment in education for this financial year has increased from R1,770,840 to R9,400,000. This is an 81% increase. "Education is the cornerstone for reducing social and economic inequalities," said Davids.

Davids said that the amount being disbursed for the 2014/2015 financial year was an indication that the Community Chest was recognised as a primary enabler for corporations and individuals to channel their social responsibility resources.

"The Community Chest provides the assurance that donations go towards responsible community endeavours to build capacity, mobilise resources and improve lives that result in long-term social change in local communities," he said.

By 31 July, 40% of the allocation would have been disbursed. The balance will be disbursed by 31 March 2015.
