The bittersweet aspect of one's job as both news editor, editor and journalist on one of the country's largest daily news service providers, is that one gets a ton of mail - thousands of emails a week. The upside is that you also get a pretty good overview of what is happening in your industry because you get to see pretty much everything, from press releases, events, comments, blogs, breaking news, thought leadership - and talk to some of the best people out there on a regular basis. We launched our 2010 section on Bizcommunity.com almost two years ago when FIFA and the 2010 LOC started formal, regular networking sessions with the media. It's great to see the amount of news from our industry starting to build up and add to the ‘official' releases of value to our industry on media organisation and brand opportunities and the promotional rules and regulations. Today I subbed two great stories from two of our agencies: Zoom on a campaign for foreign visitors to offset their carbon footprint when travelling to SA, by paying a nominal fee for a tree to be planted; and then BBDO Cape Town's campaign for John Perlman's worthy ‘Dreamfields' initiative. Both great good news stories and a reminder that 2010 is approaching - fast. We need to start that build up to the excitement of what 2010 means to us as a nation. What it will do for our spirit, what it will do for Africa. I want to feel that excitement as an ordinary citizen, not just from my privileged perch.

The final countdown - becoming a killer freelancer
[Tiffany Markman] Okay, okay - it's finally here... Part III in my series on ‘How to become a killer freelancer'. So allow me to turn on some lights for you, and let's banish the beasties.

How to make digital part of your strategy
[Japie Swanepoel] Most companies, when asked about their digital strategy answer in the same manner: “we have a website”. Okay, so you now have the website and even an email database, now what? Your internet agency updates your website on an ongoing basis and you even send out monthly emails to your subscriber base… That ain't exactly what is called a digital strategy!

Emotional television advertisements influence viewers
A recent study by the Bureau of Market Research (BMR) at the University of South Africa (Unisa) found that television advertisements that evoke primary emotions (primary emotive reactions are essentially non-conscious pleasurable or repulsive states of arousal), are remembered more readily than less emotional advertisements.

e.tv celebrates 10 years of ‘free' TV
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Once upon a time in South Africa, there was a relatively unknown private TV station called e.tv that came from nowhere and began broadcasting on 1 October 1998. But today, a decade later, that channel has become a well-established brand and a key player in the broadcasting industry - fearless of any challenge and competition. “Everyone at e.tv is proud of becoming SA's most watched English medium channel over the past 10 years and the mood is buoyant,” Bronwyn Keene-Young, e.tv COO tells Bizcommunity.com.

SABC 2 embarks on nationwide presenter search
SABC 2 will be travelling to Bloemfontein, Durban and Johannesburg during October to unearth new presenters for a new youth-property on the national TV channel.

The Model Million$: ‘Go hot or go home'
It's a recipe that truly reflects the life of an internationally acclaimed supermodel - it's got the girls, the behind-the-scenes drama, betrayal, the money, the jet set suitcase lifestyle and of course reality TV at its best: The Model Million$ launches on Wednesday on SABC3. The winning model gets R1 million and viewers can win in the interactive competition - the big prize being $1 million (yes, dollars).

SABC 2 sings for its supper
SABC 2 has confirmed that it has acquired the exclusive television rights to screen Verdi's acclaimed opera Rigoletto on Sunday 19 October at 9pm. Rigoletto, by Guiseppe Verdi with libretto by Franscesco Maria Piave, is based on the novel Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo; it is an opera in three acts, sung in Italian. This local version of the opera, with English subtitles, was performed by Cape Town Opera in the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone, Cape Town, earlier this year.
