Black Friday push drives Paystack’s new Shopify checkout in South Africa

One extra click can make the difference between a completed purchase and an abandoned cart. Paystack is aiming to remove that friction for South African Shopify merchants with the country’s first onsite card checkout.

The new functionality allows online shoppers to enter their card details and pay directly within a merchant’s Shopify checkout, without being redirected to a separate payment page.

With Black Friday approaching and retailers preparing for increased online demand, the payment provider says the streamlined experience can help businesses move customers from product discovery to completed purchase more seamlessly.

“Businesses put a lot of work into getting a customer to checkout. Paying should feel like a natural part of that experience,” says Thomas McKinnon, country lead at Paystack. “We’re giving South African Shopify merchants a way to accept card payments within the checkout their customers already know, with fewer interruptions at the point of purchase.”

Shopify agencies working with local businesses are already reporting improvements. Mario Tuscano, managing director at AskMario, says some clients have seen “an increase in conversion of up to 15% just from this feature alone”.

The launch comes ahead of Black Friday, when businesses prepare for increased demand and look for ways to turn more visits into completed sales.

Connecting in-store payments to Shopify: Alongside onsite checkout, Paystack is introducing a Shopify integration for Paystack Terminal, its in-person payments device. The integration links card payments made in physical stores with merchants’ Shopify accounts, supporting businesses that sell both online and in-person.

For retailers preparing for Black Friday and the festive shopping season, the two updates address connected needs: making online checkout easier for customers and connecting in-store payments to the platform they already use.

“Our merchants are serving customers online and across the counter, often at the same time,” says Mechiel Couvaras, senior account manager at Paystack South Africa. “Connecting Paystack Terminal to Shopify brings those parts of the business closer together. It’s especially useful during busy trading periods, when teams need to spend more time serving customers.”

South African Shopify merchants can install Paystack’s onsite checkout app to get started.
