No Comment | One of the most enjoyable events I have been privileged to attend this year was a seminar with Tom Peters, hosted by Global Leaders. In one of the themes of the day, he spoke about the rise of women in dominating the market – as consumer and leaders. There's even a word for it: ‘womenomics'. Peters is very funny at times and asked depreciatingly, ‘What was the point of men?' He quoted studies and stats that showed that everywhere on the globe, developed and developing nations alike, that women were streets ahead of their male counterparts in management and leadership success, at school, and most importantly for this market – as the consumer. Women are driving economic growth. Yet, marketers don't seem to have cottoned onto this fact, judging by the continual stereotyping we see in advertising around us – which concerns Peters, as he said organisations are not responding to the wishes and needs of the people who buy their products or use their services. Bizcommunity will be taking the conversation further at The Women's Show on its Joburg leg in Sandton, 25 – 27 April 2008, in a live panel discussion with some of South Africa's top ad women and marketers. Go to www.thewomensshow.com for more. [Note, I'm on leave for the next week but all news must be sent to marketingnews@bizcommunity.com as usual.]
Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com. All marketing news to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcome on our blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com.
| | Headlines MarketingLearnings about new media marketing[Eve Dmochowska] There were some excellent speakers present at last week's the IQPC New Media Marketing Conference in Johannesburg, and some golden bits of wisdom were dished out. While I live blogged some of the talks, after a weekend of retrospection, I offer here a more succinct summary, peppered with my own opinions. Experience is the best marketer [Desiree Gullan] People consist of a lifetime of experiences. Experiences shape who we are. And psychologists have proved that there are remnants of each and every experience within us – whether we like them or not. Some experiences are so powerful they are never forgotten. Importantly, experiences are the foundations of our opinions and are the greatest influencers in the choices we make. What does this mean to marketers? Target market – divide and conquer - Actuate[Terri Brown] You're unlikely to see an advert for super lustrous lipstick in Men's Health or John Deere tractors in Cosmo. This is because advertising space is pretty expensive and savvy marketers like to fish where the fish are biting – they pay for the space and want to make sure that they're speaking to the right people. Lifestyle SA Festival - Celebrating Black comes to Joburg - Lifestyle SA Festival After a phenomenally successful inauguration launch at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in December 2007, the Lifestyle SA Festival - Celebrating Black experience is making its debut in Johannesburg at Gallagher Estate from the 17 to 18 May 2008. Beware of fool's gold advertising [Mike Rossi] Advertising has been increasingly recognised not only as an art form (all on its own), but also as a central, defining element of popular culture. This pursuit by advertising creatives and brand custodians is suspect. A lot of skeptics question whether this approach is a relevant business tool and that the techniques of the past are by and large being ignored. Social media marketing needs a new name [Gino Cosme] Many people involved in the South African (and global) social media industry will agree that, if anything, these past few years have taught us a lot about web-based content and copywriting, online communities and networks, and marketing and communications on the Internet.
