The 2019 Joburg Film Festival opened at Sandton's Nelson Mandela Square last night 19 November 2019. The festival opened with the South African premiere of local horror film, 8, starring Tshamano Sebe, Inge Beckmann, Garth Breytenbach & Chris April.

#Africacom: The iconic shape of Africa turned out to be the unsung hero of the recent Africacom and AfricaTech trade events, which took place from 12-14 November, 2019. The twin events saw stakeholders in telecoms, data, technology, connectivity infrastructure, AI, Fintech and IoT converge on Cape Town's CTICC to learn, network and do business.

The country's best restaurants were honoured at the 2019 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, which was held at GrandWest in Cape Town on the 17 November 2019. The Western Cape's restaurants cleaned up - taking most of the top honours including the number one spot, which went to La Colombe.

The Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa (IPASA) hosted its annual Philanthropy Symposium on 28 and 29 October this year under the theme, 'Social cohesion: Towards building hope and trust in South Africa'. Advertising billboards across Johannesburg have been hit by an unknown graffiti vandal. Billboards in Fourways, Bryanston, Midrand, Rosebank, Hyde Park and at the Sandton Police Station have all been vandalised with the words 'ha ha ha' in red capital letters.

It's unclear who the vandal is, but it'll be interesting to see who this Joker is. *Update*: Well, it turns out the graffiti vandal was in fact Ster-Kinekor. It forms part of the cinema chain's campaign for the Joker film....

TBWA\ recently hosted its annual Africa Conference which attracts industry leaders from its agencies across the continent. The TBWA\ African collective comprises of 47 offices in 28 markets, who gathered under the theme of #DISRUPT to share insights on techniques and trends, including strategic collaboration, to explore creativity as a growth engine and to analyse innovative approaches in disciplines such as 4IR and technology in Africa. "We plan to maintain momentum into 2020. The 24th Pendoring Indigenous Advertising Awards was held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Arts Centre on 31 October 2019. The annual awards celebrate creativity in the indigenous languages of South Africa.

TBWA/Hunt Lascaris received the Umpetha Award for 'The Real Cost of Being Zulu' radio campaign for City Lodge Hotels. North-West University was the overall student winner for 'Mengelmoes'.

To mark World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October, South African calcium supplement MenaCal.7 released its 'Woman to the bone' campaign. The campaign - which features leading South African women Leanne Manas, Amy Kleinhans-Curd and Refiloe Seseane - aims to raise awareness of osteoporosis as well as the role South African women play in building a strong nation.

Kraken Rum has made its way to South Africa, launching on 15 October at the Jagger Lounge in Cape Town. The rum is imported from the Caribbean and is made with 13 different secret spices.
