MACRA opened applications of the six bidders on Friday and they included European-based Millicom International Cellular SA (TIGO), Lacell (Pvt) Limited of Singapore, Expresso Telecom Ground Limited of United Arab Emirates, Comium Services Sarl of Lebanon, Vivacell Africa Limited of British Virgin Islands and a local company known as Forward Ventures Limited.
A MACRA official, Mike Kuntiya said they would soon be announcing the successful bidder.
“We will identify the successful bidder after evaluation of prices,” said Kuntiya who explained that after an evaluation they will be awarding the fourth licence on December 22 this year.
A number of people and the applicants turned up for the unveiling ceremony at MACRA office in Blantyre on Friday.
Last week, MACRA awarded a third mobile cellular licence to a local consortium GAIN telecommunications services in Malawi.
MACRA public relations manager, Zamdziko Mankhambo said they will soon be meeting GAIN to discuss conditions of the license before gazetting it and the company will roll out its services within two to three months.
