    Ethiopia plans new communication strategy

The Ethiopian government is to implement a new communication strategy, aimed at disseminating the annual plan of government through a unified communication system.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Information said this was to be put into effect in the near future.

Head of the federal and regional information bureaus, who conferred on the new strategy for two days, said it would help to boost capacity-building endeavours and bring about the desired institutional change in the sector.

The new strategy would also enable the country to disseminate reliable, accurate, and up-to-date information to the public at all levels.

State Minister of Information, Tesema Fote said on Sunday business process re-engineering studies were conducted at federal and regional levels in order to revitalise the information dissemination system in the country.

The minister said information dissemination among the public has already been started based on the new communication strategy.

The major issues of the new strategy include communication activities geared towards ensuring sustainable national economic growth across the nation registered during the last four consecutive years.

According to the minister, the communication strategy will play a crucial role in successfully implementing the on-going activities of the government aimed at ensuring socio-economic development, good-governance, democratic system, and implementing the rural-centred development programs across the nation.

The new communication strategy, which is designed based on the experience of other countries, would help toward implementing the civil service reform program through establishing communication network among the various stakeholders, he said.

Various activities have been put in progress to bring about a desirable change in the mass media, he said.

The new strategy is to enable both the public and private media to connect the public with government through forming a common forum and promoting the culture of development journalism across the nation.

The minister has called on the media to carry out participatory-centred communication activities in connection with the new Ethiopian millennium with a view to ensuring national consensus and sustainable economic development across the country during the coming one year.
