5 apps making life lekker for locals

While most South Africans are regular users of internationally developed apps and tech tools like Uber, Airbnb and Netflix, there is a slew of solutions that have been created by South Africans, for South Africans to make life that much easier.

Here are five apps and tech tools that prove local is indeed lekker:

  1. MortgageMe
  2. Launched last year, MortgageMe is a fully automated bond aggregator helping homebuyers get the best deal on their mortgage without having to go from bank to bank, as was previously the norm. The process begins with the prospective buyer completing a paperless online application. This is then sent onto South Africa’s most trusted banks. While processing the application, the property details are validated, and the applicant’s creditworthiness is assessed.

If their application is successful, they will receive offers within 72 hours. Once their loan is approved - and if they accept the terms and conditions - the application will be finalised, and their attorney will register their bond.

  3. Jobbie
  4. No longer do South Africans need to spend every weekend and public holiday trying to tackle those odd jobs around the house, they can now use Jobbie – a free mobile app that helps get these done by connecting customers to workers with the necessary skills.

Jobbie saves clients from having to call around for multiple quotes and gives them access to workers they can trust since they undergo an extensive verification process, including reference checks. Workers’ skills are matched to the requirements of the task and customers choose the best workers based on ratings received for other jobs.

All this, including payment, can be done from a mobile device. Jobbie enables customers to support local workers, in turn reducing unemployment and poverty.

  5. Rentoza
  6. In a country where consumers have to contend with ever-increasing petrol price and electricity tariff hikes, it can be difficult to save for appliances, electronics and baby equipment even though they might need it.

Enter Rentoza: a marketplace that enables people to rent premium goods through a low-cost model. The platform is bolstered by a robust screening process and underwritten by-product insurance. Users can list their lazy assets on the platform and get connected to customers that have a need to utilise these products which they can rent at a reasonable price for as long as they need.

  7. Prim-U
  8. Get gorgeous anywhere you are with Prim-U - South Africa’s first online booking hub that connects world-class beauty entrepreneurs to customers and hundreds of salons, spas, hotels and guest houses countrywide.

Whether clients are in between meetings and need a manicure, want a massage while away on holiday or would like a wax in the comfort of their own home, they can simply click on the app, pick a treatment and one of Prim-U’s prim-lancers will come to them.

  9. Zulzi
  10. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a personal shopper?

With Zulzi, this luxury is no longer reserved for the rich and famous. The on-demand delivery platform lets users get groceries, medication, takeaways and more from multiple categories of stores. What’s more, this digital mall delivers in less than one hour.
