In January, Cape Town will host the International Thoroughbred Breeders' Federation (ITBF) Congress. Formed in 1950, the ITBF is the industry's global representative body.

It was established as a platform to bring key representatives from the international breeding community together to share knowledge, discuss issues and find opportunities to collaborate towards global improvements within their field.

Showcasing SA's racehorses

The federation meets every 18 months and the 2017 congress will see guests from the ITBF’s 36 member countries arriving on South African shores. Occurring during the Cape Summer of Champions season, the congress is an opportunity to showcase South Africa’s racehorses on an international stage and is likely to provide a welcome boost to the industry.

Comments Susan Rowlett, Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association chairwoman: “One of the TBA’s main objectives is the advancement of the common interests of South African Thoroughbred breeders. Hosting this congress is an opportunity for us to promote our exceptional industry to the rest of the world. It also allows us to share knowledge and further improve the Thoroughbred breed, another TBA priority.”

Progressive changes

In recent years, the ITBF has been responsible for a number of progressive changes in its field. This includes the establishment of the International Collating Centre in Newmarket, UK which collates and disseminates equine disease information. It also recently made a successful appeal to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to revise the conditions of air transport for pregnant mares.

The ITBF 2017 Congress agenda includes open forums during which a number of key industry matters will be discussed. For further information, go to www.itbf2017.co.za.
