Nigeria will become hub of agribusiness again

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said Nigeria is working to achieve zero hunger and becoming the hub of agribusiness in Africa in the next few years, says the Daily Trust.

Obasanjo spoke in Abuja at the second group meeting of the “Nigeria Zero Hunger Strategic Review 2030” project which he chairs.

“This meeting is to synthesise the reports of the nine committees on the various aspects of agricultural production in order to come up with a single document on the project. By the grace of God, Nigeria will become the hub of agribusiness again in Africa,” he said. In his address, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said the ministry had put in place enduring programmes and projects for sustained interventions along the agricultural value chain.

Chief Ogbeh said the programmes and projects would improve efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in the sector. Alhaji Sani Dangote said the zero hunger project had made significant progress in identifying loopholes and charting the way forward in the nation’s agricultural sector.

He noted that with the project, Nigeria would achieve self-sufficiency in food production and food security.

The director-general of International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr. Nteranya Sanginga, said Nigeria was still importing what could be produced in the country, adding that the meeting was to ensure the country had the right policies to support agriculture.
