Molefe, who is on loan from Transnet, had his contract extended following consultation with the board of Transnet and Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown.
"The contract extension is with a view of affording Mr Molefe sufficient time to put into effect the strategies he had already started implementing aimed at turning Eskom's fortunes around in order to ensure its financial and operational sustainability," Eskom said in a statement.
Molefe moved from Transnet, where he had been the CE for four years, to Eskom, in April 2015.
Minister Brown said at the time that the move was in order to stabilise Eskom's leadership.
The appointment came after four senior executives at Eskom were suspended pending the outcome of an inquiry initiated by the Eskom board of directors into the state of affairs at the company.
