Anglo Platinum to retrench of 725 workers

According to Fin24, Anglo Platinum confirmed the retrenchment of 725 workers from its central services and support functions. A formal section 189 notice informing the workers of the move was instituted in terms of the Labour Relations Act.

"We engaged all stakeholders to explore retrenchment avoidance [including] re-skilling and redeployment," spokesperson Mpumi Sithole said. "These options as well as the offer of voluntary separation packages have been declined."

In a statement, the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) criticised the retrenchments, reports Fin24. The Num call on Anglo Platinum to review its decision and work with other platinum miners, trade unions and the government to find a lasting solution to the platinum industry's woes.
