Topics addressed include social media misconduct, new and current issues in sexual harassment (impact of the ‘#MeToo’ campaign), robotics, automation and artificial intelligence, moonlighting and the gig economy. The conference will be held directly after the second African Labour Law Society (ALLS) Conference, which takes place on 6 September at the same venue.

“The speakers and delegates will engage broadly on labour issues that affect not only South Africa, but the whole continent as well, in a constantly evolving field that affects every sector of society,”says Shamima Gaibie, SASLAW national president.

High profile speakers confirmed for the SASLAW conference include:

  • Advocate Thuli Madonsela, former public protector of South Africa,
  • Ebrahim Patel, minister of economic development,
  • Judge Basheer Waglay, judge president of the Labour Court, and
  • Shamima Gaibie, SASLAW national president and director at Cheadle Thompson & Haysom.

SASLAW pro bono project

Proceeds from the conference will go towards funding for the SASLAW pro bono non-profit company project at the South African Labour Courts. The project serves to deliver a quality advisory service and defined labour law legal services to those who otherwise do not have access to justice. Over 19,000 clients nationally have been assisted since the inception of the project in 2011.

“This year’s conference speaks to the most pertinent challenges facing labour law practitioners,” says Gaibie. “Deep insights are drawn from real South African cases as well as international trends, with a diverse lineup of top-level experts delivering thought-provoking presentations.

“The networking opportunities and learning opportunities at the conference are invaluable as key partnerships are often formed in the informal sessions, which lead to the advancement of labour law principles, practices and understanding in the public and private sectors,” Gaibie adds.
