In an article published in Business Day Motlanthe says high unemployment and inequality levels represent a "ticking time bomb" for the country and could ignite a public uprising.
He was speaking at the South African Jewish Board of Deputies conference in Johannesburg over the weekend. He appealed to the Jewish community to contribute ideas on creating jobs and improving the prospects of the youth.
Meanwhile, Business Report says that Motlanthe told delegates at the conference that the Jewish community could help the country to resolve the high unemployment rate because of the skills, knowledge and influence that its members wield.
