Mix 93.8FM keeps bringing in listeners

Since rebranding itself in mid-2011, the creative radio station, Mix 93.8FM, estimates that listenership has quadrupled. Originally entitled Midrand FM, the addition of legends Tony Blewitt and Mike Mills with energetic newcomers like Saskia V and Roxy Blows is turning on the airwaves.

"Creative radio is underpinned by presenter personality," says station manager Abigail Milosevich, "and all are encouraged with freedom of playlist and content." Daytime radio offers a mix of music from the Sixties through to today, while evening shows comprise talk and specialist shows celebrating past masters. Music industry godfather Benjy Mudie launches his Rock of Ages show on Friday nights next week. "Mudie will join Leon Economides, Keith Burrows and Chris Venter in our stable of specialist genre presenters."

Milosevich says that the advertising load on the station has grown well since January this year. "We have attracted large retail chains through to FMCG and small entrepreneurs with positive results reported. While we may not be the largest station on the Gauteng airwaves, our rapid growth shows that it is fulfilling the demand of thousands of listeners bored with traditional radio fare." She adds that the station's success shows that community radio is a viable alternative to commercial broadcasters and that its business case supports the notion. "Delivering quality programming, at a lower input cost, while servicing the community is a winning recipe."

The station's weekday lineup includes Tony Blewitt for breakfast, brunch with Roxy Blows, lunchtime with Saskia V and Mike Mills hosts drive. Weekends Keith Burrows, Hein Kaiser, Olive and Al Pal take listeners through their day.
