Ethiopian Airlines won the Gold Award in the African Airline of the Year 2011/2012 Award given by African Aviation News, the aviation portal announced.
Ethiopian Airlines emerged ahead of the pack garnering the highest number of votes cast-in by African Aviation readers and followers, who voted in an online poll, set up at the African Aviation's website, as well as in various industry meetings and airline congress events attended by African Aviation officials. In total, more than 20,000 votes were cast. Kenya Airways took the Silver Award and Tanzania's Precision Air scooped the Bronze Award.

Receiving the second highest number of votes, Kenya Airways, Kenya's largest airline and second-largest airline in sub-Saharan Africa, earned the Silver Award. "The airline began operating in 1977" the African Aviation's statement says "and it steadily rose through the ranks to finally join the global airlines service community as a full SkyTeam member." Kenya Airways aspires to become a prominent African airline, with dominant presence in Asia, the Americas and also the European countries.
