Unified communications and VoIP at IP-CON

All organisations, from small business to enterprise, are trying to reduce expenses in hard economic times and VoIP has proved itself the ideal telephony solution for companies looking to get the most bang for their buck.

The last day of Miro's IP Convergence Conference (IP-CON) offers a comprehensive introduction and overview of VoIP and explanations of the terminology and building blocks of the technology, Miro will also provide delegates with an in-depth look at integration with PSTN/number porting, bandwidth considerations and the needs to be identified before planning a VoIP system.

Operational costs are increasing and profitability is decreasing rapidly in the differentiating competitive conditions of today's business life. According to research conducted by Gartner, approximately 85% of the income of a business is spent on operational costs, and only 4% of these expenses are used for IT investments. However, operational costs are decreased substantially as the IT expenses are increased.

Uni?ed communications is the term used for the expression of uni?cation and integration of work processes with instant messaging, voice messaging, fax, email and mobile communications. Unified communications brings new-generation communication systems together in a single structure and introduces co-operation, easy communication and an ef?cient work environment.

Performed together in a single structure

With uni?ed communications, voice, image and data communications performed in different mediums are performed together in a single structure, using similar interfaces. User experience becomes simpler and more consistent thanks to the use of these interfaces. In addition, mobility applications allow work to be completed more quickly and pro?tably. The integration of uni?ed communications with business processes is a further enabler of efficiency and cost savings.

IP-CON will also provide insight into unified communications, with Digium and Switchvox presenting on what unified communications is and how to implement it, while ATCOM will offer insight into addressing poor cellular (GSM) coverage and an overview of call centre solutions. Grandstream's presentation will cover the auto provisioning of handsets video calls over a SIP Network, mobile voice using DECT, and using gateways to migrate legacy hardware to VoIP.

"There are so many different ways to communicate with partners, customers and co-workers - by phone, email, instant messaging, fax, videoconferencing, and social media. Managing each system separately is not only inefficient, but can cause conflicts since they all use the same underlying technology: the Internet," explained Riandi van Niekerk, marketing manager of Miro.

"Implementing unified communications takes research, planning, work, and training, but when done with the right solutions, the end result is worthwhile. This year's IP-CON will effectively showcase how this can be done, offering best practices and a closer look at the most effective use of the technology."
