SA to build low-frequency array telescopes
The Department of Science and Technology has announced that it will build low-frequency array telescopes in Durban and Mauritius. The data from these telescopes will be combined to generate a detailed picture of galaxies, and study Jupiter, galaxies and clusters of galaxies, solar flares, pulsars and the weather in space.
South Africa and Australia are competing to host the largest grid of radio telescopes in the world, known as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), with only five months left until South Africa knows if it has won the bid.
In other international projects, South Africa plans to build three antennae stations in Namibia, four in Botswana and one each in Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya and Zambia.
