Mercedes-Benz South Africa contributes to nation-building project
On 22 July 2013, the Mercedes-Benz group of companies in South Africa (MBSA) announced it will be taking part in 21 Icons South Africa, a nation-building project that celebrates the role played by iconic South Africans in shaping the country of today. The aim of the project is to inspire emulation by young South Africans, thereby nurturing a new generation of leaders with strong values and morals.
The three-year project focusses first on the legacy of established icons such as Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and FW De Klerk; then introduces emerging South African role models; and finally works towards laying a foundation for young leaders of a future South Africa to emerge. In addition, the project will include a community development element through corporate social investment.
21 Icons uses the art of storytelling, across multiple media platforms, to build a picture of the tenacious spirit of South Africans. Media platforms used will maximise the national reach of the project in order to touch the lives of as many South Africans as possible. These stories of courage, determination and inspirational leadership echo a set of values, which are also the foundation of MBSA's own corporate culture. As a proud patriarch of the South African village for more than 60 years, MBSA is at the forefront of teaching the country's youth about self-actualisation, through its various social investment initiatives.
Learning valuable lessons from history's stories of success
MBSA CEO, Dr Martin Zimmermann says: "History - whether of an individual, a business or a nation - allows us to learn specific lessons, which we are able to apply to our lives and our future. South Africa stands on the brink of adulthood, as it rounds out 19 years of democracy. During this time there have been many stories of hope, inspiration and success. As the country charts its way into the next 20 years of democracy, these lessons have the potential to become the cornerstone that drives renewed nation building, and the emergence of tomorrow's leaders."
Zimmermann adds that it is imperative for these stories of success to be shared with a younger generation, so that they may be inspired to similar success. "This is a key reason why MBSA has contracted to participate in this project."
MBSA has a long history of contributing to the building of South Africa, spanning over more than 60 years. The company continues its commitment to the country, not only by running a world-class motor manufacturing plant, but also through its comprehensive skills building focus and community outreach programmes. "Our production plant in East London is in itself an iconic story of success. The resolute spirit of our workers, their dedication to excellence and their passion has placed this plant at the southern tip of Africa firmly on the world's automotive map," Zimmermann says.
South Africans can look forward to seeing more about the 21 Icons project in the media, with an innovative series of documentary-style programmes set to air on SABC 3. The first episode will be screened on Sunday, 28 July 2013 before the 7pm news.
