NSPCA to honour Mandela through Zonk'Izizwe outreach
To improve the standard of welfare of the animals in these communities, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) will be paying tribute to their patron, Nelson Mandela, on Mandela Day through an outreach programme for the Zonk'Izizwe area, an informal settlement in the East Rand of Johannesburg.
Promoting welfare and protection of all animals
The NSPCA will be located at the Zonk'Izizwe Police Station from 10am-3pm on Thursday, 18 July 2013, to provide the following services: primary wound care to local animals, administer rabies vaccinations, and knowledgeable personnel will be available to provide education on care and handling of animals.
There will also be four roving units for those with limited mobility, and their farm unit will also be present to tend to the needs of farm animals in the area. An activity area will be set up for children. The Alberton SPCA will also be available to collect and return animals needing sterilisation.
Helping communities, and especially children, to respect and care for their animals produces remarkable results within society; children respond better to authority figures and take on additional responsibility, and residents become more sensitive to the needs of others.
This will be the second consecutive year that the NSPCA has marked Mandela Day with an outreach event in Zonk'Izizwe.
