Transnet bolsters capacity at PE Car Terminal

Transport utility Transnet said on Thursday (8 September 2011) that the R4 million additional capacity created at the Port Elizabeth Car Terminal in the Eastern Cape had enabled the handling of an all-time high amount of fully built units in August 2011.

The state-owned freight logistics and transport company said the numbers were reflected in both operational and volume performance.

The terminal handled 17,445 units in August - an increase of 14% compared with 15,303 units last year.

In the year to date, 74,239 fully built units have been handled compared with 66,539 units - an increase 11%.

The parastatal said the increase in volumes was mainly attributed to growing market demand, which meant the confidence in the market was improving.

"This has been testimony that the Eastern Cape is indeed an automotive hub and Transnet Port Terminal is pleased with the contribution it is making to the economy of the country and that of the Eastern Cape.

"The creation of capacity ahead of demand at the car terminal has come in handy when the high volumes reached our shores," said Siyabulela Mhlaluka, terminal executive manager, Eastern Cape terminals.
