Alcohol warning for pregnant women

South African babies born with foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) can be diagnosed at birth after the world's first commercial project to diagnose and analyse the syndrome in new-born babies was launched in South Africa.

The Sowetan says that Tripelo in Cape Town and Trimega Laboratories in the UK - headed by South African entrepreneur, Avi Lasarow - will identify communities with the highest number of FAS cases from November when testing will start.

It says that South Africa has about 4 000 cases of FAS a year, one of the highest rates in the world and the majority of these cases occur in the Northern and Western Cape provinces.

FAS is a birth defect caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
