The Presidency on Sunday night said that Mandela's condition had worsened and become critical. He remains in a hospital in Pretoria.
Speaking in Johannesburg on Monday, Zuma said that he and the ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa had visited Madiba in hospital on Sunday night.
He said doctors were continuing to make him feel comfortable "as they have been doing".
"Given the hour - it was late - he was already asleep ... we saw him and then had a discussion with his doctors and his wife Graca Machel. Then we left."
