Gauteng premier to assess health care

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane is expected to visit health care facilities on Wednesday to assess levels of service delivery. She would visit Kliptown Clinic and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Last month she conceded that the province's health department was in crisis and resolved to step in to resolve the problems.

At the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, doctors were allegedly bringing in their own patients from private medical institutions to treat them using state resources.

Also in February, there were reports that two babies had died in the hospital the previous month owing to staff shortages and overcrowding.

Military nurses were called in to alleviate the burden.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is one of five hospitals earmarked for the pilot phase of the National Health Insurance pilot project.
