R2-billion loss for taxpayers

The Departments of Education and Health have paid more than R2-billion to sub-standard contractors who were awarded tenders but were unable to deliver quality work on time, according to Times Live.

These are some of the findings of an Auditor-General's report that investigated 247 projects with a combined value of R6,6-billion. Among other things, the report lambasts the planning of both departments.

About 70% of the 247 projects were not completed on time or were still being built though the contractual completion dates were long passed. The report says that one of the projects had a budget to R508 953 but eventually more than R8,5-million was spent on structures built for a school.

However, the structures had to be demolished as they were erected on a railway site. The school was eventually completed more than six years after it began.
