SGBs: 'Quality of education system has stabilised'
In an interview with SAnews on Monday night, Matakanye Matakanye, the general secretary of the National Association of School Governing Bodies, said the hard work that has been put into insuring that the education system improves was starting to show.
Matakanye's said the announcement of the pass rate gelled in nicely with their constant calls for South Africans to be optimistic that the standard of education would improve in the country.
"We are very much happy, we are over the moon about the results as we have been telling all the South Africans to be optimistic about the stabilisation of the system. We can see that it has stabilised because this time last year we had 73.9% and this year we have got 78.2%. Not only that, it shows that there is also quality because there has also been an increase in terms of the Bachelors," he said.
Matakanye also said he was also impressed with how matriculants fared in gateway subjects - including mathematics, physical science, accounting amongst others.
"The results in these subjects shows that we have grown, particularly with maths and science - we have grown because you will never build an economy without maths and science. So we are really stabilised.
"We just want to also congratulate the parents generally, who supported their children, as per our call to them in 2012," he said.
