More clarity over SABC bosses at week's end

Communications Minister Yunus Carrim said yesterday that by Friday this week the fate of senior management at the SABC would be clearer.

Carrim said he had seen Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's report which, according to a weekend newspaper, implicated acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng, group chief executive officer Lulama Mokhobo, former board chairman Ben Ngubane, and former communications minister Dina Pule of financial maladministration and abuse of power.

"As I understand it, there is nothing for a minister to do at this stage because each of the parties referred to in that report has to be given seven days (to respond to the allegations)," Carrim told the Cape Town Press Club.

"This Friday is when the Public Protector takes into account what the different parties affected by her report have to say.

"If the allegations against the officials in our department are still in the report, we will consult with lawyers and decide what action to take."

But the decision would rest with the board and then cabinet and parliament would make a decision, he said. - Denise Williams
