Business tax rejected in Durban
According to articles in The Daily News and The Mercury the new local business tax had been proposed by eThekwini municipality and at the seven other metros around South Africa, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and Mangaung.
The proposal was presented in August by Krish Kumar, eThekwini's treasurer, during the South African Local Government Association conference held in Durban.
With about 3 000 members, the Durban Chamber is the biggest regional business chamber in South Africa and its members have roundly condemned the plan. Durban Chamber's chief executive, Andrew Layman said members are opposed to any additional taxes and would fight the imposition of any such levy.
