On the cards: compulsory community service by all graduates

According to FIN24, SA engineering graduates may have to start doing community service. Blade Nzimande, minister of higher education, says the ANC has decided to look seriously at compulsory community service by all graduates other than those in the medical professions.

ANC delegates at the party's policy conference in Midrand debated the matter and the party will vote on the issue in December at the ANC's national conference. Community service may help graduates who cannot get jobs, to gain necessary experience before entering the formal jobs sector, FIN24 reports.

Earlier, the Mail and Guardian reported that Nzimande said community service could include LLB graduates running law clinics in rural areas or engineers gaining experience at public works. He said that this would be compulsory for all students at tertiary education institutions - even those paying for their own fees.
