FRANKFURT: German automaker BMW intends to cooperate with US giant General Motors in the area of new technologies, a spokesman for the German group said on Monday (12 December 2011).

"We're holding talks with GM on various new technologies," the spokesman said, without disclosing any further details. According to the weekly magazine WirtschaftsWoche in its latest edition, the two plan to cooperate in fuel cells, with GM sharing its research in that area in return for BMW putting up some of the funding.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage and the partnership could be officially announced after the Detroit Motor Show in mid-January, the magazine said.

BMW already signed a partnership agreement with Toyota of Japan earlier this month to co-develop new-generation batteries for electric and hybrid cars.
