Minister congratulates emerging beef farmer

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tina Joemat-Pettersson has congratulated the winner of the Absa Agricultural Research Council National Emerging Beef Farmer of the Year for 2012, Matshediso Molale-Moeketsi.

Molale-Moeketsi's achievement is a wonderful cause for celebration. The Ministry and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a statement that the role of women in agriculture is now. Women have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to break ground and to undertake duties previously thought to be the reserve of men only.

Beneficiary of scheme

"The fact that the winner is a beneficiary of the national department's Kaonafatso Ya Dikgomo Scheme, which is sponsored in partnership with the Agricultural Research Council, is an example of the kind of future we envision for agriculture," Joemat-Pettersson said. The aim of the scheme is to support emerging beef farmers by teaching them to apply best livestock management processes to increase their productivity and profitability.

On 15 October the world recognised International Rural Women's Day in recognition of the role that rural women play in food security. In conclusion, the Minister expressed her appreciation of the role that corporate business is playing in the upliftment of agriculture. She called on more partners to help realise the goals and to assist government with the worrying issue of food security.
