Theatre, music and dance at the Darling Voorkamerfest

Join the Darling community during the first weekend of September for a surprise world of enchanting theatre, music and dance. The annual Voorkamerfest promises a fabulous line-up of local and international artists, all performing in Darling locals' "voorkamers".

The Voorkamerfest, organised and run by the local community, falls under the auspices of the Darling Festival Trust. It was started by Dutch producers Wim Visser and Inge Bos, together with Darling's very own Pieter-Dirk Uys.

The hub of the event is at Evita se Perron where festival-goers can collect tickets for one or all of the Voorkamerfest routes. Each route takes you on an unforgettable journey between three different Darling homes, at which three varied 25-minute performances are showcased. There are four different time slots during the weekend, each with seven routes, with 21 performances in total, offering a mix of theatre genres catering for all tastes. Transport to and between venues is all done by Darling's local taxis.

The wonderful element of anticipation

A large part of the Voorkamerfest's unique charm is the wonderful element of anticipation, as the venues and performers remain a complete surprise until the visitors arrive at each voorkamer. The houses range from the small and humble to elegant Victorian homes and the owners play host to this unique South African cultural experience.

While waiting for the next taxi route, visitors can amble around Evita se Perron with its boere-kitsch memorabilia and Boerassic Park, and also mingle and browse at the village market, which presents the diverse array of foods, wines and crafts for which Darling has become so well known. Additional pre-show entertainment is also provided by the local school orchestra and dance groups, and the Darling Spring Parade.
