Jozi Film Festival award winners announced

The second annual Jozi Film Festival took place recently, 23 films being screened at three venues across Joburg : The Bioscope Independent Cinema, Villa Arcadia and Kliptown. The festival started with Fanie Fourie's Lobola at The Bioscope.

There were sold out screenings of Fanie Fourie's Lobola, Orania and Extraction. Trish Malone's master class in scriptwriting was also standing room only and about 300 people attended the Kliptown screenings.

The winners of the Jozi Film Festival 2013 were:

• Best Documentary Short Film: Siphe Bongwana for Energy is Power.
• Best Documentary Feature Film: Tobias Lindner for Orania.
• Best Short Fiction Film: Joint winners: Guy Spiller for My Room At The Centre of the Universe; and Nevil Sandama for iBalaclava.
• Best Student Film: Mikles Manneke for Kanye Kanye.
• Best Feature Film: Vickus Strijdom for Zama Zama.
• Audience Choice Award: Henk Pretorius for Fanie Fourie's Lobola.

The winners of the first Vodacom Mobile Phone Film Competition were also announced. This was the first competition of its kind: anyone living in Joburg or telling stories about Jozi could enter a one- to three-minute-long film shot on a mobile phone.

The winners of the Vodacom Best Mobile Phone Film were:

• 1st place: Justin Sandmann - Today's Special.
• 2nd place: Jacqueline Wetselaar and Rohin Gosling - Jozi Dreams.
• 3rd place: Donna Sibande - Better Tomorro.

The winners all received a Blackberry Smartphone, Blackberry Internet Service for a year as well as airtime courtesy of Vodacom.
