Amigos para Siempre Concert Series at UCT
Along with a line-up of talented local artists, the concerts also feature internationally recognised artists, including Cape Town-based Flamenco guitarist Saudiq Khan; concert pianist and musical entrepreneur Christopher Duigan; Spanish saxophonist David Salleras; and South Africa's guitar maestro James Grace.
Grace, who is also co-ordinating the series, explained that the forthcoming series follows from the success of the Magnum Opus concert series hosted earlier in the year. "This time we wanted to involve more artists on stage, hence the amigos (friends) theme, so each concert involves several musicians performing in various ensembles. The Latino theme enables us to do that with great variety," said Grace, who is head of guitar studies at UCT's College of Music.
World-class musicians
"We are delighted to provide a platform to showcase the versatility of our world-class musicians and are thrilled to be introducing Spanish saxophonist, David Salleras to local audiences," he added.
On Wednesday, 17 October Flamenco guitarist Saudiq Khan will perform a selection of his own works, including Gitano, Farruca and Juerga from his latest CD, "Madiah".
Saudiq's fiery flamenco touch has been inspired by maestros such as Paco de Lucia, Paco Pena, Rafael Riqueni and Vincente Amigo. Joining Saudiq on stage will be guest artists Andre Webb (bass) and Robert Davids (cajon) and he will also be joined for a medley of duos by James Grace on guitar.
The concert on Wednesday, 24 October with pianist Christopher Duigan features Maxine Matthews (saxophone) and Spanish saxophonist, David Salleras, who is based at the Barcelona Conservatoire and considered one of Europe's most exciting and innovative composers and performers.
The final concert on Wednesday, 31 October with James Grace features Bridget Rennie-Salonen (flute), Vasti Knoesen (mezzo soprano) and Marie Claire de Villiers (soprano).
All concerts take place in the Chisholm Recital Room (C7) at the South African College of Music at UCT (opposite the Baxter Theatre) at 8.15pm.
