Music film festival on screen at the Labia

The Sound on Screen music-themed film festival is to be screened at the Labia Theatre, Cape Town, between 2 and 10 December, 2011. It will include documentaries, biopics and concert films covering a range of artists and genres, from abroad and locally.

The event will end with a live performance by Cape Town female-fronted industrial-metal band Terminatryx for their "Remyx v1.0" album launch (Saturday, 10 December at 7pm), as a global online video stream link from the White Room at Sound & Motion Studios.

Filmmakers and musicians from the two local doccies will be present at some of those screenings.

There will be a Hamer guitar give-away from Paul Bothner Music.

A dozen-and-a-half set list covering their entire career, from Out Of Space and Firestarter, to Smack My Bitch Up and Run With The Wolves.

Blood Into Wine

The enigma known as Maynard James Keenan (vocalist of Tool and A Perfect Circle) ventured into the realm of wine-making. This very unique documentary covers that amazingly unexpected journey and takes a rare look at this elusive rock star from a very different angle.

The Creators

Moving look at different struggling musicians in the Cape Town area, from an aspiring opera singer and hip hop stalwart to a busker and poet. The Creators explores the chaotic reality of modern-day South Africa by peering through the eyes of its artists. Born into separate areas of the formerly segregated country, the subjects re-craft history in their own artistic languages. Some of the movie-makers and musicians will be present at the Friday, 9 December. 6.15pm screening.

Wendy O Williams & The Plasmatics

Deserving far more recognition as an alternative icon, the dynamo known as Wendy O Williams was at the forefront of a new-generation punk/metal hybrid, literally blowing up the stage, often turning into performance art. But there was more to it than blowing up cars or chainsawing guitars in half on stage.

James Blunt - 'Til You're Told To Stop

An intimate documentary following James Blunt across his early years before becoming an international phenomenon.

Black Metal - A Documentary

With backstage interviews and raw live footage, you get an insight into this controversial extreme metal genre from the bands themselves, including its various pioneers, from Venom, Immortal, and Mortiis, to Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Celtic Frost and King Diamond.

Real Punk Get Checked

Rare interviews (and performances) with punk legends like Johnny Rotten, Jello Biafra, The Ramones, Becky Bondage and many more.

Mama Goema

A journey to the heart of the Mother City and a beat called Goema. With indigenous roots, colonial influence and shaped by Cape Town's slave history, Goema's blueprint lies in the city's carnival culture. The documentary charts the evolution of this musical genre. Producers and some of the subjects of the movie will be present at the Sunday, 4 December, 4pm screening for an audience Q&A.

I Saw Giraffes In India

Israeli folk-rock band Girafot took the wild plunge and head to India. This documents their trip, looks at the band's music and the people creating it.
