Minister calls on joint operations to fight crime

PRETORIA: Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints), which is used to coordinate major events in South Africa, should be modelled to assist in the general fight against crime.

All security-related operations in relation to recent Brics summit in Durban were coordinated through Natjoints. There were no crime incidents reported during the two-day summit at the Durban International Convention Centre.

"We congratulate the Natjoints for a job well done and would like to see this working-together approach being translated to normal day-to-day policing," Mthethwa said in a statement.

He said South Africans would be justified in expecting the same improved policing on a daily basis.

"It is, after all, our goal to ensure that South Africans are and feel safe, in their homes, at schools, at workplaces and various recreational areas."

Mthethwa said government had invested huge human and state resources as well cutting-edge, state of the art technology to complement crime-fighting programmes, particularly within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster.

The Natjoints team had successfully secured over 500 international events.
