Greenpeace used street art and creative confrontation to demand Levi's to "go forth" and Detox. Activists held a dancing flash mob in Randburg, and volunteers stripped off their "toxic" clothing to reveal "Detox" tattoos on various parts of their bodies.
"It is imperative that global fashion giants understand the need to eliminate these harmful chemicals that are later washed into our waterways;" Greenpeace Africa Consumer Campaigner Dianne Mc Alpine said. A recent Greenpeace International's investigatory report revealed dumping of industrial wastewater containing toxic and hazardous chemicals from two of Mexico's biggest textile manufacturing facilities.
"We are asking Levi's to commit to zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020, following the lead of Zara and Mango," Mc Alpine said. iAfrica.com reports that other brands linked to the Mexican facilities include Calvin Klein, LVMH, Guess, Gap and Walmart.
