Sandra Aspeling, head of Product Development at Santam say, "This is not about handing out freebies to clients. We have carefully monitored our industry and listened to our clients to determine their needs. Based on our research, we developed a suite of value-added services which we believe address those needs."

"We live in a state of flux where things change constantly and where certainty is a relative term. We looked to the concept of real value and found some compelling information which fuelled the need for this offering. With the proliferation of value-added offerings, we have found that these services are generally not well-understood and that they are therefore not always used. We have decided to expand our SOS offering to include these services thereby ensuring maximum impact" says Aspeling.

"We believe these services will go a long way in addressing some of the needs of our client base and society broadly, which is why we took our time to conduct comprehensive research with our brokers and clients, to determine what the real needs are. These insights allowed us to select essential products which are quite tangible in significance and create an applicable service channel from which they are rendered."

Santam's personal policy holders, on 1 November 2012, received the following range of benefits at no extra cost to them.

  • Road Assistance
  • A 24-hour contact for roadside emergency services anywhere within the borders of South Africa.

  • Home Assistance
  • A 24-hour helpline to assist policy holders at home with the call-out of service providers such as electricians, plumbers and locksmiths.

  • Home-Drive Assistance
  • To drive policy holders home in their own vehicle in the event that they have had more than the legal drinking limit. This service is limited to six call-outs a year and is limited to within 50kms of the city centres of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Nelspruit, Polokwane, Durban, East London, George, Cape Town and Bloemfontein.

  • Route Assistance
  • A 24-hour limitless directions helpline, within the borders of South Africa, by telephone, fax or e-mail, for when you are lost and need directions.

  • Medical Assistance
  • To assist with emergency telephonic medical advice, transport by ambulance to hospital, arrange for your family to be notified of your condition and trauma counselling. This service is available at all times.

  • Legal Advice
  • A 24-hour helpline assists with legal advice on matters such as criminal offences, fines, debts, contracts, labour law, divorce, maintenance, accidents and more. This advice is given by qualified and experienced attorneys and is offered by Legal Exchange Corporation.

Each of these services are available through Santam's 24/7 Emergency and Claims line on 0860 505 911.

"Our promise of doing good and proper insurance means individuals don't have to wait to get to the claims stage to experience everything we can offer them. We are really proud of our value-added risk control and claims management services that go beyond insurance" says Aspeling.
