Economic policies sound, implementation problematic, Patel says

Speaking at a Progressive Business Forum breakfast on the fringes of the ANC conference in Mangaung, minister of economic development Ebrahim Patel said the government's economic policies are sound, adding that the concerns from the private sector are more related to the implementation thereof, Moneyweb reports.

Patel fielded questions relating to labour problems in the agriculture sector, poor service delivery - especially in local government, infrastructure deployment, job creation, direct foreign investment and unsecured lending. Answering questions on government efficiency, Patel frequently referred to the President's Coordinating Council. "One of the reasons for a delay in the rollout of [the] infrastructure plan is a disconnect between the three spheres of government which brings about delays," he said.

"Growth is vital, but on its own it is not sufficient. Government, labour, civil society and the private sector must work together. Self interest cannot be afforded."
