SA must promote food gardens

According to the 2012 World Hunger and Poverty Facts and Statistics, 239million of the 925 million hungry people in the world are found in sub-Saharan Africa.

As the world celebrated World Food Day on October 16, I could not come to terms with the fact that given the soil texture we have, the rain we receive annually and the arable land available, the tip of Africa could still be starving.

In addition, farming has been part of the African way of life for many centuries. I find it very disturbing that these days we seem to depend on buying every piece of food we consume.

I think we should strive to build vibrant, equitable and sustainable communities that contribute to food security through food gardens.

Though I am disappointed in our communities for not producing their own food on a large scale, I take my hat off to Gauteng province, where 82% of households have adequate access to food.
