Mafikeng farmers pledge Census 2011 support

The Sekae Farmers Association in Mafikeng's chairperson Gert Pretorius, says that the association will support the government's call to have farm workers counted during the 2011 Census from 10-31 October.

"We are fully behind government's call that people on the farms get counted," said Pretorius, "[n]o one will be left out" he promised, because the farmers are determined to achieve good Census results - reflecting their commitment to "assist government with [their] support."

Recently, National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel called on public representatives - MPs, MPLs and councillors - to help defuse the risk of people avoiding being counted because, he said, they were best placed to persuade communities to take part in the Census. Manuel added that democracy in South Africa needs a successful Census to produce results.

With less than two weeks before the census, North West MEC for agriculture and rural development Boitumelo Tshwene said that - should the farming communities be undercounted - it could have serious implications on future planning. "I call on farmers to allow enumerators access to their farms," he said
