WAMPEX prepares for 20th anniversary

From relatively humble beginnings in 1994, the West African Mining and Power Exhibition (WAMPEX) has grown into a very popular event every. The West African mining community has long regarded this exhibition held biennially in Accra, Ghana as a benchmark for the industry's impressive growth in the sub-region.

After its first highly successful edition, the exhibition spawned the West African Mining and Power Conference (WAMPOC) - now the definitive industry conference charting progress, examining trends and promoting opportunities across the mining and power industries.

WAMPEX and WAMPOC enjoy the endorsement of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Energy, the Minerals Commission of Ghana and the Volta River Authority as well as most regional countries such as Cote d'lvoire, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Liberia, Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Guinea.

It is traditional for the Ghana Chamber of Mines to hold its annual general meeting on the last day of the event to capitalise on the presence of all the leading mining house role-players.

Platform for networking

"We are proud of the fact that, for 20 years, WAMPEX has been bringing the industry stakeholders together," says John Thomson, managing director of the South African based co-organiser, Exhibition Management Services. "WAMPEX provides the platform that creates ideal networking conditions, helps develop strong relationships and enables the various governments' mandates to add value to the mining and power sectors."

Throughout its existence WAMPEX has successfully introduced new suppliers, new ideas, new technologies, services and products to an ever-increasing number of West African mining operators. It has played an acknowledged and critical role in the development of technical resources, human resources and infrastructure.

The event is unique in that all the leading mining houses, such as Anglogold Ashanti, Goldfields, Newmont and Golden Star Resources, join their suppliers to showcase their joint operations on the exhibition floor - something that happens nowhere else in the world.

At the 2012 WAMPEX event, companies from more than 13 countries exhibited at the Accra International Conference Centre. The organisers are confident that 2014 will see an even wider representation of companies and nations. WAMPEX and WAMPOC will take place from 28 to 30 May 2014 in Accra, Ghana.
