Sloane's on a mission for SA kids
A recent survey uncovered the shocking fact that South Africa is the country with the third-most overweight citizens, with America coming first and Britain second. But it's not only adults who are fat. Some 17% of South Africa's children aged one to nine years are obese.
The organisers of the Good Food & Wine Show - South Africa's biggest culinary extravaganza which takes place at the Coca-Cola Dome from September 23 to 26 - have decided to do something about it by teaching kids and their parents about healthy eating in a fun and accessible way. And who knows? Along the way we are sure to uncover plenty of budding Nigella's and Jamie's.
Heading for the not-to-missed Good Food & Wine Show are BBC CBeebies presenters Katy Ashworth and Sid Sloane who will get the little ones to pop on an apron, roll up their sleeves and create something tasty in the kitchen.
Katy presents CBeebies' I Can Cook, which welcomes children into the kitchen to create a host of delicious meals and snacks that are quick and easy to prepare even if the grown-ups don't know their way around the kitchen.
Katy and Sid have written a fun-filled programme especially for The Good Food and Wine Show and through this, youngsters will be preparing their own nutritious meals, which can be prepared with the child and a parent or carer. Sid has also written a programme about the good sandwich versus the bad sandwich - perfect for ideas for tasty and nutritious school lunchboxes.
Entrance for the Johannesburg show is R75 for adults and R40 for children under 12 and pensioners. Show doors open Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 9pm and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
