Best known for pioneering a world-first surgical procedure using 3D-printed middle-ear bones in 2019, Tshifularo has spent his career advancing hearing healthcare in South Africa.

The innovation has now secured the necessary regulatory, ethical and licensing clearances, bringing it closer to patients affected by hearing loss. Sound of Hope, a non-profit organisation working to improve access to hearing healthcare, welcomed the recognition and the potential to make hearing restoration more accessible.

In South Africa, where one in six people lives with some degree of hearing loss, the cost of hearing restoration remains beyond the reach of many. Making innovations such as Tshifularo’s procedure accessible could help address significant barriers to hearing healthcare.

Breaking hearing barriers

“At Sound of Hope, our mission is to ensure that no one is left trapped in silence due to financial or systemic barriers,” said Donald Pillai, chief executive officer and campaign director of Sound of Hope.

“Tshifularo’s groundbreaking work with 3D-printed middle-ear bones exemplifies the exact kind of clinical excellence, imagination, and purpose we need to transform hearing healthcare in South Africa.

"We congratulate him on this richly deserved recognition and stand in solidarity with his vision to develop future healthcare professionals who will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.”

Tshifularo’s contributions extend far beyond the operating theatre. Through his academic leadership, he continues to inspire medical students and specialists to pursue difficult questions and remain steadfast in their service to patients, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of skilled healthcare professionals for the country.

Sound of Hope remains committed to supporting and amplifying innovations and leaders who make the dream of restored hearing a reality for all South Africans.
