Sewing seeds of success

The DuPont Pioneer/Pannar Seed deal has finally been awarded SA's approval, after years of pursuing the matter through the Competition Commission and Tribunal, and eventually the Supreme Court of South Africa. In December 2010, the Competition Commission declined approval of the merger between DuPont subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International and the family-owned Pannar, saying that it would lessen competition in SA's maize seed market. Failing consent from the Tribunal, the companies took the matter to the Competition Appeal Court, which granted the merger. The Supreme Court backed this decision on Friday in the face of an appeal from Competition Commission.

In research news this week, Ernst & Young/BER have reported "lively growth" in SA's durable goods sector; BMi notes slow growth in baked goods, while high prices takes its toll on the rice market.

Congratulations to young fashion designer, Jane Elizabeth Kotze for winning Elle's 2012 Rising Star award. The self-proclaimed "fashionista hermit" will be working with Mr Price to adapt her collection, which will then be sold in selected Mr Price stores.

Have a great week!
