    Bizcommunity.com launches into Africa
After leading the South African business-to-business and online media in publishing daily news to the media, marketing and advertising community in South Africa, Bizcommunity.com is launching into Africa to provide our readers on the continent and advertisers with comprehensive and durable content country by country – adding to the 800 000 newsletters it already distributes monthly with SA-specific content in this industry.

The art of handling customer complaints
[Jean Moncrieff] South Africans are often encouraged to complain about poor service rather meekly accept it – but how seriously are our complaints taken once we make them? How many companies actually have formal processes for handling complaints? Experience suggests they are few; and yet, the way a complaint is handled can make all the difference to whether an organisation keeps or loses a customer.

    Watershed moment for marketers
[Chris Moerdyk] It was encouraging that see that when it came to nominations for the new board of directors at the fledgling Marketing Association's inaugural general meeting this week, so many local marketers stood up to be counted.

    Be a cash test dummy
[Simone Puterman] Cherryflava Media’s recently launched Cherrypicka.com allows readers to try out and review products from various local brands, in addition to reading about new trends emerging in business, marketing and advertising. “The web really allows for honest review of brands - and therefore I saw potential in putting all of that thinking in one place,” says Jonathan Cherry of cherryflava.com.

Lowe Bull cleans up Creative Circle Ad of the Year
Lowe Bull has dominated the Creative Circle Ad of the Year awards, taking top place for its Unilever/Axe campaigns in the Magazine, Newspaper and Film categories and a second place in Radio. Members of the Creative Circle judged the Ad of the Year from the winners of the Creative Circle Monthly Awards last week in Johannesburg.

    Interactive is imperative
[Uwe Gutschow] As the consumer moves from ‘mass media’ to ‘my media’, becoming increasingly more powerful in the brand creation process, advertisers and marketers need to re-look their models and place traditional marketing and advertising approaches under scrutiny. Interactive divisions don’t need to be integrated into the agency; it is the agency that needs to integrate itself into interactive thinking.

    Long walk to freelance
[Shelva Carstens] The agency creative is a dying breed. This animal is increasingly being replaced by that rare and often lesser spotted freelancer. The freelancer is seen as a different animal from the employed creative. He is a marksman. A specialist. His job is to hit and run. He quickly steps in to rescue the agency/client and leaves just as quickly when the job is done, often leaving with that superhero smirk on his face, as if to congratulate himself for a job well done.

The pen is mightier than the sword…
[Louise Marsland] Media contemporaries expressed shock and outrage yesterday, Thursday 8 March 2007, at the armed attack on outspoken Sunday Times columnist David Bullard, calling him a “profoundly valuable man” and the “conscience” of South Africa.

    Bullets won’t silence Bullard
[Chris Moerdyk] If those who gunned Dave Bullard down were trying to silence him, they should know that they have not succeeded one bit. Knowing him as well as I do, having survived this attempt on his life and given that he will make a full recovery, Bullard will look at leveraging every possible positive aspect he can out of this incident.

State of media crime coverage in SA
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Poverty, unemployment, HIV/Aids, homelessness, women and child abuse, moral depravation and corruption, among others, are just some of the critical issues facing post-apartheid South Africa. The media – as society’s watchdog – has, since the dawn of democracy, been equal to the task in reporting extensively on these issues to create social awareness and force the Government to review its strategies or implement workable policies, media analysts say.

How to use del.icio.us to take over the world
[Mike Stopforth] The value of del.icio.us - a social bookmarking application - is often misperceived, and its potential underestimated. You see, just being able to store your WWW bookmarks remotely is not sexy enough. Being able to share them with millions of other users, and in turn being able to interrogate the collective bookmarking efforts of those millions of other del.icio.us users in a very powerful way, is.

    Creating user-friendly websites
[Janie Smit] As we move towards broadband as the standard, multimedia websites are becoming the norm rather that the exception. If done well, sound, video and animation will enrich a user’s experience. The opposite is also true for bad designs and this is a sure way to ruin your reputation fast. Here are six tips that will help you simplify the way you deliver information to users.

Industry support for SA blogging community
The 2007 SA Weblog Awards are moving from an enthusiasts-only event to a credible competition, thanks to Storm Telecom’s sponsoring of a Mac Book Pro, worth over R17 000, which will go to the winner of Best Overall Blog. Increasing competition in online classifieds industry
The online classifieds industry has changed considerably in the last two years and competition is heating-up as various big-name Internet players have begun dabbling in the business. A 30gig Video iPod will go to the best entrant in Claim To Fame who uploads a video of him or herself demonstrating the most talent in whatever way, shape or form.
