Radio jocks have been discussing this to death, but I still wonder: What has happened to the glamour of the Miss SA pageant... Nowadays it's hadly advertised (the call for entries, as well as the actual crowning night) and it seems that only modeling agencies know about it....!
This brings me to my second point: What happens after the girl has been crowned? Yes, I know she participates in Miss Universe and Miss World (and SA has been faring poorly in these the past couple of years), but these shows are hardly broadcasted on South African television and the media seldom reports on it. This year I had the 'honour' of meeting Miss SA a couple of times (our company was one of the 2004 sponsors and contractually she was obliged to grace us with her presence at some of our corporate functions) and I have to say that I was disappointed. While Joan is clearly an intelligent lady, she had no social skills and could hardly interact with guests... In fact, at most functions she spent her time in the corner on her cellphone....
No wonder we never feature in Miss World/Universe....!!!
Having said all this: Well done to Claudia Henkel (Miss SA 2004/2005)!
