Mobile company has new MD for Malawi
King has moved from Celtel Nigeria where he was GM of that country's Northern Region.
“Our brand goal remains to make the lives of our customers better, and I look forward to a rewarding working experience with our stakeholders,” he said.
King brings to Celtel Malawi wealth of experience spanned over 20 years garnered in telecoms industry, private enterprise and the FMCG sector.
He started his business career with Unilever where he was exposed to different markets and varied roles and holds an MBA from the University of Zimbabwe.
King's first assignment with Celtel was as Marketing Director in Uganda where he is said to have been instrumental in planning the successful turnaround of that business.
He was also a member of the pioneer team that worked to launch Celtel's borderless network service ingenuity called ‘one network' which was initially for the east African region before it extended to Central and Western African regions.
One Network is the world's first borderless mobile network.
While in Nigeria, King who moved there as GM for Lagos Mainland before taking a similar post for its North Central office in Abuja, is credited with helping to grow its business to where it now ranks second largest mobile network operator with 13 million customers.
King won the Telecoms Administrator Award of the Year from the West African Students Union (WASU) for his contributions to the mobile telecoms sector of the West Africa.
Celtel Malawi Ltd is a member of the Pan-African mobile network, which has over half a million customers in Malawi.
The company has had mixed fortunes since its inception in Malawi in 1999 where it experienced a severe mishap on March 3 last year when technical hub in Limbe town of Blantyre was destroyed by fire and disabled network services for several months.
Celtel Malawi is part of Africa's third-biggest operator Celtel, owned by a unit of Kuwaiti cell phone operator MTC.
