MACRA to issue cellular mobile radio telecommunications licence

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is in the process of issuing an individual licence to provide public cellular mobile radio telecommunications services in Malawi.

The regulatory body has since started calling for public comments on the proposed draft of the licence which is about to be offered to Globally Advanced Integrated Networks Limited.

The body said this is in line with the law where before a licence is issued the body is supposed to call upon the public to make representations and it has given the public until Friday, 30 January, 2009 before the licence will be finally issued.

The Communications Sector Policy of 1998 states it is essential to have the closest linkage between the licensing of telecommunication and broadcasting services and the management of the frequency spectrum to be used by these services.

“The policy says MACRA will ensure proper co-ordination of spectrum allocation between the civilian and military sectors to avoid interference,” a telecommunications expert said.

He said that MACRA will also ensure that the allocation adheres to international treaties and conventions to which Malawi subscribes.
